Product Description
Type of stainless steel sheet & plate
Metal in China® has three hot-rolled stainless steel production lines and two cold-rolled stainless steel production lines. Hot-rolled stainless steel is produced by passing billets through roughing and finishing mills at the steel’s recrystallization temperature of approximately 1,100°C – 1,300°C. Hot rolled and coiled, the coil will get a softer surface finish without any oxide layer and impurities. Cold-rolled stainless steel is usually processed on the basis of hot-rolled stainless steel sheets, and the coils are processed by hot-rolling, pickling, and cold-rolling at room temperature. It can be made into various cross-sectional forms to meet different customer needs.

13 stainless steel surface finishes to choice
While there are variations of each finish that might be available from a stainless steel supplier or applied after purchasing, most popular finishes fall into one of 13 types.
The first 5 finishes (Numbers 0 through 2BA) are referred to as mill finishes. These are often the finishes in which steel is produced. They may be used as-is or refined further through additional steps depending on the desired appearance.
Surface Finish | Finishing Process Route |
---|---|
NO.0 | Hot-rolled and annealed |
NO.1 | Hot-rolled, annealed, and passivated |
NO.2B | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, and passivated, with an additional pass through highly polished rollers |
NO.2BA | Features the same processing as 2B, but requires annealing in an oxygen-free vacuum |
NO.2D | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, and passivated |
Finishes number 3 to 8 apply an increasingly smooth texture to the surface of the steel, with brushed and coarse having a texture that is both visible and noticeable to the touch.

NO.3 | Coarse |
NO.4 | Brushed/Hairline |
NO.5 | Satinctor in determining its unique characteristics however… The Number 6 matte finish is rarely used in modern projects, however, it still has a place in restoration or small projects where a unique appearance is desired. Reflective and mirror finishes are the smoothest of the series, providing a glossy, smooth finish with little visual distortion. However, the additional processing required also results in added cost. |
NO.6 | Matte |
NO.7 | Reflective |
NO.8 | Mirror |
The final two finishes (Numbers 9 and 10) refer more to the processes used than the final appearance. Results range from rough to reflective and can even include colour variations and other interesting features designed to increase visual appeal or provide a particular appearance.

Density of Stainless Steel
The weight of stainless steel sheet can be calculated by the following formula:
Weight (kg)= Thickness (mm)* width (m)* length (m)* density (g/cm3)
For example, if the SS304 sheet is 16 gauge (1.6mm) in thickness, 950mm in width, and 2.2m in length, its weight is about 26.52 kg (1.6*0.95*2.2*7.93).

The stainless steel weight per square meter differs with the thickness and the steel grade. For example, the weight of 0.64mm (24GA) SS304/304L per square meter is about 5 kg. While the weight of 0.48mm (26GA) SS316/316L is about 3.8 kg. Below is the gauge chart for your reference. If you want more details, please get in touch with us!
Grade | Density(g/cm3) |

frequently asked questions
1. Do more research. You have to investigate the supplier’s background, company strength, factory, customer review, etc. before purchasing. If you want a lower price, choose less well-known, but reliable suppliers. You can find a lot of company information, such as the website, Facebook pages, Linkedin, etc. Due to COVID-19, it is difficult to visit onsite. But you can ask for video chats, videos, etc.
2. Compare the suppliers, product details, and their service.
3. Do not rely on the price only. If you are experienced, you will know that there is little price difference between the same products. You need to watch out for much lower prices to avoid getting scammed. Especially, SS steel has many grades. You may get SS202 instead of SS304. As for quality items, you can ask for certificates, quality inspections, samples, etc. At Wanzhi Steel, we accept third-party inspection. Also, you can get samples free. If you have any problems, please contact us for help.
Stainless steel is a material that has strong corrosion resistance, which means it does not easily rust. It is formed by adding anti-corrosion elements such as nickel to form a very thin, firm, and stable chromium-rich oxide protective film, preventing continuous infiltration and oxidation. However, it will rust in certain conditions – when exposed to damaging chemicals, saline, grease, moisture, or heat for an extended period. In addition, the greater the nickel content, the greater the possibility of rusting.
1. Electrochemical Corrosion
It occurs when the surface of stainless steel accumulates dust containing other metal elements or dissimilar metal particles. In humid air, the water between the attachment and the stainless steel connects the two into a micro-battery, which triggers an electrochemical reaction and damages the protective film. It is called electrochemical corrosion.
2. Chemical Corrosion
The stainless steel surface adheres to organic juices (such as vegetables, noodle soup, sputum, etc.). In the presence of water and oxygen, it constitutes an organic acid, and the organic acid corrodes the metal surface for a long time. Similarly, corrosion is caused when stainless steel’s surface adheres to acids, alkalis, and salts or is used in polluted air (such as the atmosphere with many sulfides, carbon oxide, and nitrogen oxide).
Different stainless steel manufacturers in China will offer both hot rolled and cold rolled stainless steel. Below are more differences for your reference.
1. Making Method
The former is made at high temperatures, while the latter is processed at average temperatures. It often decides the grade of the steel used for the manufacturing process.
2. Surface Treatment
Cold rolled stainless steel coils with good surface quality, no oxidation scales, and various surface treatments available. After pickling, there are oxidation scales on hot rolled stainless steel coils, and the surface is grayish or dark brown. And the smoothness of cold rolled stainless coil is higher than that of hot-rolled coil.
3. Mechanical Property
The mechanical property of hot-rolled stainless steel is much lower than that of cold-rolled stainless steel. The cold rolling possesses higher hardness.
4. Price
Cold rolled SS coil has higher toughness and surface quality than hot rolled SS coil and higher price than hot rolled coil. But the price also depends on the quality of the product. Different suppliers will offer different prices. For example, Wanzhi Steel can often offer factory sales prices for large orders compared to other SS coil manufacturers. Feel free to contact us for more details.
