13 stainless steel surface finishes to choice
While there are variations of each finish that might be available from a stainless steel supplier or applied after purchasing, most popular finishes fall into one of 13 types.
The first 5 finishes (Numbers 0 through 2BA) are referred to as mill finishes. These are often the finishes in which steel is produced. They may be used as-is or refined further through additional steps depending on the desired appearance.
Surface Finish | Finishing Process Route |
---|---|
NO.0 | Hot-rolled and annealed |
NO.1 | Hot-rolled, annealed, and passivated |
NO.2B | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, and passivated, with an additional pass through highly polished rollers |
NO.2BA | Features the same processing as 2B, but requires annealing in an oxygen-free vacuum |
NO.2D | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, and passivated |
Finishes number 3 to 8 apply an increasingly smooth texture to the surface of the steel, with brushed and coarse having a texture that is both visible and noticeable to the touch.
Stainless Steel Coils Surface Finish For All Your Complicated Needs
Our engineers team can help clients process quality surface finish as their requests.
Surface finish of coils available: NO.1, 2B, 2H(Rerolled Bright), BA, No.4, 8K (Mirror), HL (Hairline), Polishing Bright, etc.

Surface Finish | Finishing Process Route |
---|---|
NO.3 | Coarse |
NO.4 | Brushed/Hairline |
NO.5 | Satinctor in determining its unique characteristics however… The Number 6 matte finish is rarely used in modern projects, however, it still has a place in restoration or small projects where a unique appearance is desired. Reflective and mirror finishes are the smoothest of the series, providing a glossy, smooth finish with little visual distortion. However, the additional processing required also results in added cost. |
NO.6 | Matte |
NO.7 | Reflective |
NO.8 | Mirror |
The final two finishes (Numbers 9 and 10) refer more to the processes used than the final appearance. Results range from rough to reflective and can even include colour variations and other interesting features designed to increase visual appeal or provide a particular appearance.
Surface Finish | Finishing Process Route |
---|---|
NO.9 | Bead blasted |
NO.10 | Electropolished or heat-colored surfaces |

uses for various stainless steel finish
While each finish had a unique appearance, it also impacts the corrosion resistance and hygienic nature of the steel.Smoother steels are easier to clean and stand up to chlorides and other corrosion sources well.Rougher steels are more affordable, but won’t withstand exposure to corrosion sources as well and are tougher to clean. This is important if you’re considering stainless steel for food preparation or medical environments. Most food-grade steels start with a minimum finish of 4—though many will use a higher finish on accents or for appliances.

Density of Stainless Steel
The weight of stainless steel can be calculated by the following formula:
Weight (kg)= Thickness (mm)* width (m)* length (m)* density (g/cm3)
For example, if the SS304 sheet is 16 gauge (1.6mm) in thickness, 950mm in width, and 2.2m in length, its weight is about 26.52 kg (1.6*0.95*2.2*7.93).

The stainless steel weight per square meter differs with the thickness and the steel grade. For example, the weight of 0.64mm (24GA) SS304/304L per square meter is about 5 kg. While the weight of 0.48mm (26GA) SS316/316L is about 3.8 kg. Below is the gauge chart for your reference. If you want more details, please get in touch with us!
Grade | Density(g/cm3) |
---|---|
201, 202, 304, 304L, 305, 321, 301, 302 | 7.93 |
316, 316L, 309S, 310S, 347 | 7.98 |

Additional steel processing services
Cut large coils into small coils or Strip
For carbon steel coils, we offer the additional service of cutting large coils into smaller coils or strips. For container transportation, the loading weight of each container usually cannot exceed 26 tons, and each large roll is usually around 28 tons.
At seaports, each large steel coil is usually cut into 3 smaller coils for easy loading into containers. For bulk carrier transportation, the roll weight is usually required to be less than 18 tons, so most of the time, it is also necessary to cut a large roll into 2 small rolls.

flat coils into steel plate
For the final application, the coil needs to be flattened and cut into steel plates, so we flatten the coil and cut the coil into the required size of steel plate. In order to save the cost of container loading, it is loaded into a 20-foot container, so the cutting length is below 5800mm, usually cut into lengths of 2440mm and 5800mm according to requirements, and the width is usually 1220mm and 1500mm. After cutting the steel coil into steel plates, we can do black paint on the surface of the plates to make the plates rust-proof.
cutting Service
For parts that require extremely high wear resistance, we use abrasive waterjet cutting to maintain hardness throughout the part without creating a heat-affected zone. For thicker plates up to 200mm, we use precisely controlled CNC oxy-fuel cutting. frequently asked questions
Stainless Steel Strip Coil is used extensively in many industries. Metal In China® Stainless coil can be manufactured with a safe edge, or oscillated to match customer requirements.
Typical uses of stainless steel slit coil include heat exchangers, heating elements, flexible tubing, filtration devices, cutlery products, springs, and surgical instruments.
Stainless steel is considered to be safe by most. Even users, that are very fancy about vaporizer materials tend to be ok with stainless steel in the vapor path. It is utilized by many vaporizer manufacturers for all sort of things, from chambers to screens and dosing capsules.
Stainless steel coil is manufactured by hot rolling stainless steel slabs in a reheat furnace. The hot rolling process is carried out at a certain high temperature. This temperature is known as the recrystallization temperature in the industry, which is between 1,100° C to 1,300° C, which often depends on the grade of the steel used for the manufacturing process.
The steel slabs are continuously run through heating and rolling mills. The resultant product is then suitably coiled. Post hot rolling and coiling, the stainless steel coils are passed through the annealing and pickling lines to get softer and brighter surface finish, free of any oxide layers and impurities.
