Technology

High carbon steel, often referred to as carbon tool steel, contains between 0.60% and 1.00% carbon, an amount that allows it to be hardened more than lower carbon steels. The manufacturing process of high carbon steel pipes includes the following steps:

  1. Uncoiling, Flattening, and Cutting: The raw steel is first uncoiled and flattened into a long strip. The flattened strip is then cut into the required length to serve as the base material for the pipe.
  2. Forming: The cut steel plate is shaped into a cylindrical form. This is typically done by a machine which perforates the plate and begins the process of shaping it into a pipe.
  3. Welding: The open seam of the cylindrical form is then welded. This can be done through the Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) method or the Submerged Arc Welded (SAW) method, depending on the pipe diameter and wall thickness.
  4. Heat Treatment: The pipe is then heat-treated to increase its strength. This typically involves heating the pipe to a certain temperature and then rapidly cooling it. High carbon steel, due to its higher carbon content, requires careful control during this process to avoid becoming too brittle.
  5. Cold Drawing or Hot Finished: Depending on the desired physical properties, the pipe might undergo a cold drawing process to refine its dimensional accuracy and improve its mechanical properties. Alternatively, the pipe might undergo a hot finishing process.
  6. Finishing: The finished pipe is then straightened and cut to the desired length.
  7. Inspection and Testing: After the pipe is manufactured, it must be inspected and tested to ensure it meets the specific standards. This typically includes visual inspections, nondestructive testing methods, and mechanical and chemical analysis.

Note that high carbon steel can be more difficult to weld than other types of steel due to the potential for the formation of brittle and hard heat-affected zones and weld metal. Therefore, special care must be taken during the welding process, such as preheating the steel before welding and using an appropriate filler material.
